Student Engineering Research Assistant

Prototype Development – Wearable Technology Project

Position Overview

We are seeking a motivated and technically capable engineering student to support the development of an early-stage wearable technology prototype and companion mobile software interface. This role involves contributing to the integration and testing of a hardware–software system within a research and prototyping environment.

The student will work collaboratively with project leadership and potentially faculty or research laboratory partners to assist with system integration, prototype validation, and technical testing. This opportunity provides hands-on experience in applied engineering development, hardware–software integration, and early-stage prototype research.

The project focuses on developing and validating a wearable device platform that interfaces with a mobile application capable of real-time communication and data management. Specific technical details of the system will be shared only with approved project participants.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist with prototype hardware assembly and system integration
  • Support embedded system setup and firmware configuration
  • Participate in wireless communication testing and connectivity validation
  • Assist with mobile application connectivity and device integration
  • Conduct bench testing, troubleshooting, and performance validation
  • Document testing procedures, technical observations, and development progress
  • Collaborate with project leadership and research partners on development tasks

Required Qualifications

  • Currently pursuing a degree in one of the following fields:
    • Electrical Engineering
    • Computer Engineering
    • Mechanical Engineering
    • Computer Science or Software Engineering
  • Basic knowledge of hardware prototyping or embedded systems
  • Familiarity with programming, scripting, or firmware environments
  • Understanding of wireless communication concepts
  • Ability to troubleshoot technical systems and work in a collaborative research environment
  • Strong problem-solving and documentation skills

Preferred Skills

  • Experience with microcontrollers or embedded platforms
  • Familiarity with Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, or other wireless communication protocols
  • Exposure to mobile application development (iOS, Android, or cross-platform frameworks)
  • Experience with electronics integration, rapid prototyping, or mechanical enclosure concepts
  • Interest in wearable technology, hardware–software integration, or product prototyping

Experience Level

  • Junior or Senior undergraduate engineering students, or
  • Graduate students with relevant prototyping or embedded systems experience

Students should be comfortable working in a hands-on development environment involving both hardware and software components.

Compensation

Students participating in this project will receive paid compensation for their engineering support and technical contributions. Compensation will be determined based on experience, technical skills, and level of involvement in the project.

Work hours and project scope will be coordinated with the supervising faculty member, research laboratory, or project leadership in accordance with university policies for student research or technical assistant roles.

Confidentiality and Non-Disclosure Agreement

Because this project involves proprietary technology and patent-related intellectual property, selected students will be required to sign a Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA) prior to gaining access to project materials, prototype components, or technical documentation.

Participants will be required to maintain confidentiality regarding project designs, development processes, and technical information. This requirement is standard practice for projects involving early-stage technology development and intellectual property protection.

Learning Opportunities

  • Early-stage prototype development
  • Hardware and software system integration
  • Wireless device communication
  • Technical testing and validation
  • Applied engineering research and innovation processes
